Semiconductor

In wire industry terminology, a material possessing electrical conductivity that falls somewhere between that of conductors and insulators. Usually made by adding carbon particles to an insulator. Not the same as semiconductor materials such as silicon, germanium, etc. Used for making transistors and diodes.

A semiconductor is a material that is an insulator at very low temperature, but which has a sizable electrical conductivity at room temperature. Roughly, a semiconductor is an insulator with a band gap small enough that its conduction band is appreciably thermally populated at room temperature.
